Bounce Email Setup
(United Kingdom)
Currently considering purchasing your module, though I have a question in regard with bounce.
We send a newsletter from our main support address to minimise problems with getting filtered as spam. This email is used with verified registration to maximise customer email validity. Now with your module I imagine this email setting will be picked up from the host settings in DNN which is currently configured with our support email address. However I am wondering how this is used with bounce monitoring. You mention in the manual that it is not recommended to have the support email used for bounce monitoring as well. What happens if we do? We don't think using a noreply@domain.com approach as suggested in the manual is useful because there is no verification on this and so emails from this address may end up in spam folders which defies the point of sending them in the first place.
Appreciate your help.

The email sent from is configured in the manual default settings, and for each send. So it has no relationship to the host account email address.
Each time the bounce monitoring checks for new data to cross check, it will download every email it can get it's hands on in your pop email address. It is only to save on data transfer that we suggest using a separate email box for bounce back monitoring.

Thanks for the clarification but it is not totally clear to me. Can you explain what do you mean by "it will download every email it can get it's hands on in your pop email address." What does "it" refer to. I imagine that emails are send from SMTP server and the bounced messages then are stored in the mailbox (which I suppose this is what you mean by POP). So does the module simply read the bounce messages from the mailbox and update a bounce list on the DNN database or something else happens? If this is the case, then I cannot see a problem to use our support email address for this, assuming that your module can distinguish between bounce emails and other emails and also not delete or manipulate normal support emails.
This is an important issue to me. I used another supplier's email module which is similar to yours. For bounce check they transferred all the mails from the mailbox to a DNN table so they could then check this list regularly. This is an unacceptable solution because there are simply too many mails and this duplication was a total waste of database space and bandwidth. So I like to know how your implementation works.
Thanks

Re: Bounce Email Setup

Our module runs from the DNN host schedule process and polls a POP3 email account mail box. It will read the email messages in there, and scan for bounce messages. This is as you describe.
There it the potential for a lot of traffic to an email server. Imagine you send email messages to 500k users, and 30% of them bounce. This will result in a lot of traffic when the bounce check it performed. Not a huge amount of traffic, but a lot.
I only mention it because one of our clients ran their own in office mail server on a fairly average connection. Each time a 500k message was sent, and the bounce system ran, their in office connection ground to a halt while the messages were read.
FYI, I believe I can guess the other email module you refer to, and I know much of what we designed has been "borrowed" into theirs. So you will find some similarities in this, such as the code that is used to read bounce messages.

I see. So I imagine that this should not be a major problem if the emails sent out are in the region of 20K or so. And may be in the future you can batch the bounce checking activity so a mail server does not go down.
And you mentioned that the module that we already consider "borrowed" your code. So just to make sure can you confirm whether your module copies the mails into the DNN database or not. I could not figure this out from your reply.
Thanks

Batching is not necessary. Just don't have the mailbox with zillions of previous email messages in it, and expect more bounces if your list is not already vetted.
The email messages are read but not stored.
Basically, the advise is: use the free trial and work out if it does what you want. I suspect from your questions it will.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there a limitation with the trial version in comparison with the purchased version. Can we use the trial version to run a live campaign and test it?

Just to report back. Tried the demo version and it worked perfectly. Very pleased with the features, so proceeded to purchase.
Only to say that it would be great of it is possible to save a draft of a newsletter before sending it so it can be edited and also to be able to copy content from another old newsletter that has been sent out to avoid repetition or the necessity to save backups of newsletter text outside the module. Otherwise, functionally worked very well. Look forward to these new features in the future.
Thanks for your support.
