During a new user signup using the profile template, our popup asks the user for name, email and a password in the pop up form. Is this data sent encrypted or does it depend on the page in our web site to be https? How do I configure this form to be sent encrypted if it is not.

Yes you require the site to be HTTPS, and google encourages you to make all pages of your site HTTPS these days.
