Server error 500 No Such User with Send Copy
(United States)
Hi. I'm getting an error message when using the "Send Copy" feature of Feedback Designer. It's almost like it's trying to use the user submitted email to logon to the websites email server. It gives an error like "no such user found". It only does this for the "Send Copy", and when it does give this error it will still send the form data via email successfully to the host email. It will also do auto-reply just fine to the user submitted email address, so there is no problem with the user's email address, it can be sent via "auto-reply" but not via "send copy". It's not a big deal, as it's not a necessary feature but does add something to the professional look and feel of the form.
I am using DNN 4.5, and have the SMTP settings set to "anonymous" with proper email and password set. I get this error using "anonymous" or "basic"; the "NTLM" setting in DNN does not work for the email account so it's not used.
Also, the send to email address in Feedback Designer is the same as the one in SMTP settings.
Any ideas?
Rick

It sounds like the SMTP server is set to prohibit open relay (as it definately should be set this way ie no open relay).
When smtp servers are set to prohibit open relay, they can still relay to local addresses. i.e. host addresses.
So it sounds like...
1. Open relay is set (as it shoud be)
2. your user details for authentication to send messages outside the local domain are incorrectly set.
3. The internal message will be delivered and the external message will fail.
To solve this... etither...
1. Set the correct SMTP relay user name and pass.
or
2. Allow relay form the IP address of your website. This will mean you do not need SMTP user name and pass.
To test this.
Set your host account email address to an external address. ie the address that fails.
Go to the Host SMTP server settings, and try sending test messages with the various user name and pass settings. When you are getting the messages correctly to an external address, you have your SMTP settings correct. You can then change your host account back to your original email address.
Let me know how you go.
If you need more assistance, use our Contact Us form on this website to make contact and pass on your login details. We would be happy to have a look at what you have set.

Well, no luck. Basically, the host settings in DNN and my web server are not going to allow this. I'm still not sure why it would allow an auto-reply email to be sent to the same address it denies sending a copy of the email to. But, what you say above makes sense, and after trying your suggestions, there does not seem to be a combination in the DNN Host SMTP settings that will work. I do have the correct SMTP server name, password, and userid entered.
Thanks for your help, though,
Rick

Thanks very much for the offer, but after reviewing some help logs at the web host I don't think there is a way around this. Basically, they state that when using my smtp server, the login email must be presented and the "from" email address on any mail must equal the login email address, with no exceptions. So, sending a copy of the info in the contact form would have to have the same from address as the login, it could not equal the email of the submitter. That applies to ASP .NET 2.
I use WebHost4Life for my websites as well as my friend's website that I'm working on here, have used them for 5 or 6 years now and have been extremely happy with them, 99.9% uptime and an excellent support staff. This is the first time a problem has not had an answer in my favor, but I can understand the security issues that would be there if it worked differently than it does now. And maybe it wouldn't be an issue. I've only been using DNN for a month or so, basically learning it and setting up a website, and then I will train my friend how to perform her own updates etc. and step in as needed with any problems she can't resolve or anything new she wants to do with the site. She's not really looking for increased business, just a nice web presence to keep up with the times.
Well, that probably more than you wanted to know, but for now we are happy with our host and happy with your software as well. The "send a copy" feature is only a minor thing for us, but for someone else it might be more important. Perhaps in a future upgrade the option to set the from address in the "send a copy" feature to the websites email address would be helpful to others with the same security configuration issue at the web host? Again, not a big deal if that never happens, the Complete Form Designer module is pretty amazing as is and has already proven to be a very valuable tool for us. I still highly recommend it.
Thanks again,
Rick
