SMTP works in DNN but not FD
(United States)
I recently changed my SMTP configuration from localhost to our offsite exchange server. I adjusted all of the settings for my various portals and those send mail fine. The portal in question which has instances of Feedback Designer on it can send mail fine from other forms on that portal, and when I send the DNN SMTP test I get it no problem. For some reason FD throws an error when sending form data. So for giggles, I re-enabled the localhost SMTP server, thinking maybe FD maintained the original setting. But no go, it's a rather generic message: There is a problem with the configuration of your SMTP Server. Mail was not sent.
Like I said all other mail modules, DNN default feedback, I use Ventrian's Property Agent etc. and those don't mind the new settings. Not sure how to further troubleshoot this, is there a detailed error log for FD that may give me a better understanding?

Feedback designer is not doing anything other than use the host SMTP settings.
Sounds like confusion between authenticated access to get the ability to send to external addresses, and testing to local addresses.

Listen to this podcast. It explains it well.

That podcast was grueling at first, felt like I was back in school there for a while until they got to the part about testing with a host email that's not on the Exchange/SMTP server you're authenticating against.
Moral of the story, and for posterity, if you're authenticating against an Exchange server for whatever.com, using an account whoever@whatever.com as the host email account (Host Settings>>Basic Settings>>Host Details), the DNN 'test' of the SMTP settings may give a false positive. Depending on Exchange's SMTP Connector settings, mail within the organization can bypass the need to authenticate for outgoing mail.
To truly test the SMTP settings when authentication is required, the host email above should be temporarily set to an address outside the organization e.g. a hotmail or gmail account.
Until such time as I can safely configure the Exchange server, I will set these portals back to using a local SMTP server.
Thanks for your patience,
-mk

Always the way when you are "missing something". You have to wade through all the stuff you do know to find the one "nugget" of good guff!
