mht file generates xml attachments
(United States)
In sending a message from an mht file that was generated by Word2007, I'm finding that with some email services, such as gmail and yahoo, the message arrives with 5 attachments. Each are named "noname.xml" and contain this content:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
<ds:datastoreItem ds:itemID="{46896E50-A640-41B4-B1F8-47392B2AAAE5}" xmlns:ds="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/officeDocument/2006/customXml"><ds:schemaRefs><ds:schemaRef ds:uri="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/officeDocument/2006/bibliography"/></ds:schemaRefs></ds:datastoreItem>
Do you know why these are generated, and how to prevent them from being generated. This is obviously a bad thing for users to receive obscure attachments along with the message.
Thanks,
Mike Duncan

As you will see, the email is let through by gmail filters etc. That is because the attachments make up the components of the email message content.
This is kind of the whole point of the mht / mhtml format. If you deliver an html message, then the images in that message need to be referenced to an online link. The client viewing them needs to be online to view them etc.
With MHT, the components (images etc) are packaged and delivered with the email message. Clients do not need to be online to see the images in the email message.
The format is something designed by Microsoft, so we have no ability to change the way it works. If you don't like how it packages and delivers the content, then the choice is there to use HTML messages.

I'm still curious as to whether having these xml files is a common experience with an mht. I understand that it is Word generating these files, but it certainly creates an ugly experience for the user. It seems like using Word or mht is very unworkable.

It is common, but depends on the client program for the experience.
All MS programs hide the attachments, some online programs do better at hiding, but basically will show the attachments exist. Personally I don't understand why you would say that seeing some attached files in an email make it unworkable. The client can still see and read the email, and that is the point of it.
