MHTML
(South Africa)
I have created MHTML files to send using MS Word 2007. There was no problem except that the email that gets sent out has three attachments - a .thmx file and two .xml files that seem related to the mhtml content. It is kind of annoying and it confuses some of the people receiving these emails.
So, I decided to create a html page in Visual Studio, view it in IE8 and save the file there as .MHT. I have a fairly simple formatted html it all works great AND I get an email with no spurious attachments.
I tried some more complex HTML formatting, create a .MHT file. View the .MHT file in IE8 and it looks exactly like the original .HTML file - Great! Send email and it comes out all formatted wrong. Interestingly enough if I edit the .MHT file in MS Word it comes out incorrectly formatted the same way the email is incorrectly formatted...
Am I just running into the limitiations of MHTML and using it for email?

Yes you are. The MTHML or single file web page is technology designed as part of MS office and is originally part of the mail merge technology of MS word.
As such, the output of MS word into a MHT or MHTML is effectively the only ability that exists. The addition of MHT or MHTML output to other technologies like IE8 or VS are after thoughts by Microsoft to deliver this ability.
Our suggestion is to design in word, and output to MHTML to see that the end result will look like. This is the most reliable way to check out an end result. (As per the manual). Functions like dynamic floating tables etc is not supported by MHTML, and this is where you will see that result.
If you send MHTML files that have images and complex layout, some people will see thmx file attachments depending on their email client. There is no way around that. But they will also be able to view the content without being online, so that is kind of neat.
We have found that a mail out to around 18,000 non tech clients will generate less than 6 enquiries about the file attachments, and only for the first send. Once they have received one or two messages, we never hear boo.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. Yeah, there are images and although not a complex layout I guess it isn't plain either.
I have had a few requests asking me to not send the attachments - will tell them to ignore it. They are very tiny after all.
Cheers

Yes, I do a similar trick to create my .mht file for distribution. I use Microsoft Web Expression to edit the message then click preview to view it IE 8, then save it as an mht. file. Works perfect everytime!
